If Africa must reach its potential through private initiatives, then it must first raise the standard of its bookkeepers.

About Us

Why Bookkeeping for Africa

Any society depends on private initiatives to start good businesses that create value for all stake-holders (including customers) and provide gainful employment.

Good businesses need good bookkeeping in order to grow. A good bookkeeper records all transactions of the business and provides useful information on the status of the business to all stake-holders.

In summary, "Good bookkeeping" is a necessary condition to enable:

- a bank to consider providing a loan

- an investor planning to invest in the entity

- government to determine a fair tax

- a share-holder or investor to keep a watch on his or her investments

To meet the above needs, we have started "B4A". It is a public-private initiative that stands for "Bookkeeping for Africa".

To help us implement the program, we are working in partnership with Universities in Africa that have departments dedicated to Accounting and Bookkeeping. Cairo University in Egypt would be an example.

Computer hardware companies, like Dell, Lenovo and HP, are being invited to be part of this initiative.

Computer software companies, like Microsoft, Intuit and Tally, are being invited to be part of this initiative.

Banks like Dangote are also being requested to support this project.

Needless to add, the promoters plan to invite USAID and World Bank to be an important part of this project too.

What is Project "B-for-Africa"

The goal is to raise the standards of bookkeeping in Africa by training 100,000 bookkeepers. We propose to do this over a period of ten years by the "Percolation Model", where in the

- first phase, we will train 1,000 bookkeepers (alpha bookkeepers) - we call it the "Train the Trainer" phase. Some of the trainers in this program would get an opportunity to spend about a week in Salt Lake City, Utah, at the global headquarters of Universal Accounting.

- second phase, each of the 1,000 trained bookkeepers will train 10 bookkeepers (called "Beta Bookkeepers") to create 10,000 beta bookkeepers

- third phase, each of the 10,000 beta bookkeepers will train 10 bookkeepers (called "Gamma Bookkeepers") to create the target number of 100,000 bookkeepers.

While the first part of the training is focused on the basics of bookkeeping, the second part of the training is on the computer software tools such as Quickbooks and Tally.

Needless to add, once the bookkeepers are trained, they need to be gainfully employed, both in government and private enterprises.

From Africa we propose to take support of:

- The Government of each country in Africa

- Private companies in Africa who readily understand the importance of bookkeeping

- Fortune 500 companies present in Africa

From outside Africa, we propose to take support of CPAs (Certified Public Accountants) and CAs (Chartered Accountants)

Who is behind "B-for-Africa"

The core group consists of

* Universal Accounting (a leading bookkeeper training company, based in Utah, USA), represented by its President Roger Knecht

* L.egacy Partners International (a global strategy and marketing firm, based in Connecticut, USA), represented by its President, Michael DiMauro

* Entely Global (P) Ltd (a value-for-money online bookkeeping services company), represented by its President Viswa Kollepara

* Onine Management Tools, LLC, (a company with deep knowledge in international business, especially Africa, based in Boston), represented by its Vice President, Michael DiMauro.

The project is being launched in Cairo at the annual conference of the African Association of Accounting between Sep 1 and 3. Businesses interested to participate have two options:

* The Gold Option: For $ 25,000, they would get a booth, 2 conference attendees and access to all the bookkeepers in the program.

* The Platinum Option: For $ 45,000, they would get a double booth, 4 conference attendees and access to all the bookkeepers as well as the University Department faculty who are in the program.

Phase 1, 2: Identifying the "Train the Trainers (numbering 1,000) " in Phase 1; Screen and select 10 bookkeepers in each of 1,000 geographies in Phase 2. This will create a body of 10,000 bookkeepers. We will then get each of these 10,000 bookkeepers to train 10 bookkeepers to reach our target of 100,000 bookkeepers.

Based on preparedness of the markets, we have identified 15 of the 54 countries in Africa, where we would start the project. In each of these 15 countries, we have identified an educational institution that would provide the basic infrastructure to enable the training to be organized - classroom space, whiteboard, tables and chairs for the students, a projection system (where feasible) and broadband internet.

We will also provide an option for Internet-savvy bookkeepers to go online and get trained.

Interested participants may email to chrstnmcmllan@gmail.com, with the Subject Line stating "Project B4A" (Bookkeeping for Africa).

We are planning a soft launch by inviting a batch of bookkeepers (any number from 3 to 10) from Africa for the online course. In addition to online access, students can get access to qualified teachers who would be available over Skype for face-to-face interaction.

In the first phase, the training would be conducted in English. Later on, based on demand and availability of teachers, we may offer the same program in French.
